Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Tummy Tuck Overview
A flat and well-toned abdomen is something many of us strive to achieve. Often times diet and exercise alone cannot help to accomplish these goals.
Factors which put women at an increased risk for excess skin and fat include:
- Pregnancy
- Aging
- Significant fluctuations in weight
- Heredity
- Prior surgery
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, aims to remove excess fat and skin and helps to restore weakened or separated muscles creating a smoother and firmer abdominal profile.

Final Thoughts
This surgery is not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate diet or exercise program. It cannot correct stretch marks, although these may be removed or somewhat improved if they are located on the areas of excess skin that will be excised. Tummy tuck surgery can also be done in conjunction with other surgical procedures such as liposuction. Dr. Chahin will discuss with you these procedures, and what is mutually felt to be the best method of treatment to aid in achieving optimal results for you.
Tummy Tuck/ Abdominoplasty FAQ
Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that aims to create a slimmer, firmer, flatter abdomen by removing excess fat and skin, and tightening the abdominal wall muscles. It is not a treatment for obesity and is not a replacement for regular exercise and good eating habits.
You will be placed into a compression garment that will help reduce your swelling during the early postoperative period. You will be strongly encouraged to wear this garment continuously for two to three weeks following surgery.
Yes, you can get liposuction of what is considered as “safe zone areas of the abdomen” such as the love-handles and lateral torso, at the same time as a tummy-tuck procedure. Typically, it is recommended to avoid liposuction of the central area of abdominal wall itself at the same time as abdominoplasty (tummy-tuck) because of increased risk of vascularity “blood supply” compromise resulting in delayed wound healing.
Walking is encouraged the day after surgery with back slightly bent, but we recommend waiting about seven days before trying to stand up straight. Strenuous activity and heavy lifting are limited until six weeks following surgery. Swelling will be present for two to three months after surgery.
Abdominoplasty resulting from massive weight loss can sometimes be considered a functional procedure by your insurance carrier.
Abdominoplasty surgery may be safely performed at the same time as a hernia repair or hysterectomy. Insurance may cover the hernia repair or hysterectomy, but the abdominoplasty portion is often deemed to be a cosmetic procedure and is not typically covered by insurance.
