Although, this is rather uncommon it is not totally unforeseen as breast implants are not made to last forever. Such circumstances that call for a removal of breast implants might include/but are not limited to:

Over time, breast implants can change shape, additionally the overlying breast tissue can also change, creating a less desirable appearance or feel to the breast. Breast implant revision surgery is not a standard or routine procedure, this needs to be tailored specifically to the patient’s goals and desires. The goal of breast implant revision surgery is to remove or replace dated breast implants or to adjust volume in order to improve the appearance of the breasts while updating the implant material while restoring a youthful breast contour and appearance.

En bloc capsulectomy ensures the complete removal of all tissue and material relating to the breast implants therefore providing the body with a clean slate.

Yes I perform en bloc capsulectomy. I completely remove the implant and the capsule which surrounds the implant together. Often times a combined breast lift or mastopexy procedure is completed with the removal to provide the patient with a more youthful breast appearance.

Capsulectomy is the surgical removal of the scar capsule tissue that has thickened and/or hardened around a breast implant. Removal and/or replacement of saline or silicone gel implants is only performed when a change in the size or type of implants is desired. This also can aim to correct any complications from your primary breast augmentation.

Not typically. Breast revisional surgery is not covered by your health insurance but many breast implants have a lifetime warranty on the actual implant device. It is important to note that after ten years the costs associated with having surgery to replace the implants are no longer covered. Because of this, many women will elect to replace or update their breast implants at or around the 10-year time frame. Occasionally some health insurance plans may provide coverage for the removal of the breast implant when a silicone rupture or capsular contracture are present, however, this does vary widely among insurance carriers. There has to be an established rupture or change in the breast implant that would aid to establish the medical necessity.
