Rhinoplasty FAQ

Rhinoplasty or nasal reshaping is a surgical procedure on the nose to enhance facial harmony or improve its function.

Functional Rhinoplasty is performed for medical reasons to correct impaired breathing function caused by structural defects in the nose (ex. deviated septum) or correct disfigurement resulting from trauma or birth defects.

Aesthetic Rhinoplasty is performed to achieve a desired aesthetic appearance of the nose. The goal is ultimately to create facial balance and desirable proportions.

A splint or taping of the skin is usually placed on the nose for one week.

At the conclusion of the procedure a long-acting numbing agent is used to ensure the patient leaves the surgery center very comfortable. The nose will be noticeably swollen for several days, and shouldn’t be blown.

Rhinoplasty patients could potentially have bruising and swelling however this depends on the procedure performed. Most patients experience congestion. It may take up to a year or even longer before all minor traces of swelling disappear, but the nose will definitely look better by the time the splint comes off after surgery.

In terms of recovery, it largely depends on the type of rhinoplasty [open or closed procedure (need for septal, ear or rib cartilage grafting, fascial grafting, etc.)], but the downtime is typically a one- to two-week period for both. After five to six days, the splint can be removed and one can go out in public, if desired. There might still be some slight bruising but nothing a little concealer can’t cover up. While initial recovery is generally quick, healing can continue for the next year.

Most rhinoplasty surgery is done under general anesthesia meaning you are completely asleep. It’s exceedingly safe even in sick and elderly patients. Most patients having rhinoplasty surgery are generally healthy, and risks of long term complications are exceptionally uncommon.

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is not covered by insurance; however, if there is a functional component such as a problem breathing from a deviated septum or other causes, that portion of the surgery may be considered for coverage by your insurance plan.
