Breast Lift Overview

Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman’s breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. Breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. It is done by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. Also, the procedure aims to reduce the size of enlarged areola to give a more aesthetic and youthful appearance to the breasts.

You are an ideal candidate for a breast lift surgery if:

  • You are physically healthy and maintain a stable weight
  • You do not smoke
  • You have realistic expectations
  • You are bothered by feeling that your breasts sag, have lost shape and volume
  • You breasts have a flatter, elongated shape or are pendulous
  • When unsupported, your nipples fall below the breast crease
  • Your nipples and areolas point down
  • You have stretched skin and enlarged areolas
  • One breast is lower than the other

Final Thoughts

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, will not change the size of your breasts or round out the upper part of your breasts. If you are looking for your breasts to look fuller or smaller, you might want to consider either breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery. Dr. Chahin will discuss with you this procedure, and what is mutually felt to be the best method of treatment to aid in achieving optimal results for you.

FAQ – Breast Lift

A breast lift aims to enhance and rejuvenate the breast appearance by repositioning your own breast tissue for optimal, desirable aesthetic result. Implants don’t change the placement of the breast on the body, only add additional volume. This procedure can be combined with a traditional breast augmentation for more comprehensive results.

The ideal candidate for a breast lift procedure would be anyone experiencing a drooping, flattening, “pancake” appearance of the breast following weight loss, pregnancy, nursing, or basic aging processes. If you notice a change in the appearance, texture, shape and laxity of your breasts, you may be a good candidate for a breast lift procedure. This may be independent or in combination with implant if volume change is desirable.

The main types of scar patterns following a breast lift are: periareolar (around the areola), vertical scar (also called lollipop scar) and inverted-T (also called Anchor scar). Each scar represents a different incisional approach to the breast lift procedure. Dr. Chahin will always favor the technique with the least possible scarring while still being able to reach the desired results of the patient. This will all depend on the individual’s anatomy, desired results, and other factors, which Dr. Chahin will discuss with you in your consultation.

Most women feel sore at first, accompanied by swelling. You can expect to be in discomfort for the first few days, although this will vary depending on the type of incisions used and whether or not an augmentation was included as part of your procedure. The majority of our patients are able to return to work after a week or two. Dr. Chahin uses a preventative-numbing approach to help reduce discomfort after surgery.
