Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation Overview

Breast enhancement augmentation surgery is a choice to consider for women seeking improvement of breast volume to accomplish a proportionate enhanced appearance. Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, incorporates the use of implants to fulfill your desire for fuller, curvy, and more appealing breasts, or to restore lost breast volume after weight reduction, pregnancy, or nursing.

The ideal candidate for breast augmentation surgery would:

  • Be physically healthy
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Have breasts that are fully developed
  • Be dissatisfied with your breasts smaller size
  • Be dissatisfied with your breasts changing shape and volume after pregnancy, nursing, weight loss, or with aging
  • Have breasts which vary in size or shape (breast asymmetry)

Final Thoughts

Although breast augmentation changes the size and shape of the breasts, it will not correct severely drooping breasts. If you want fuller looking and lifted breasts, then a breast lift would be required in conjunction with the augmentation. These procedures can either be done simultaneously or in separate surgeries. Dr. Chahin will discuss with you these procedures, and what is mutually felt to be the best method of treatment to aid in achieving optimal results for you.

FAQ – Breast Augmentation

Most women will have the ability to breastfeed following breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Chahin often places the implant using a partial sub-muscular technique (under the muscle), therefore the mammary glands – the glands that produce breast milk – are not directly affected. The risk of not being able to breastfeed is significantly decreased with this placement of the implant. Other placement of the implants such as sub-glandular or sub-fascial pockets are also an option, depending on each individual patient’s desires. Consult with Dr. Chahin to choose which option is the best for you.

The reality of implants is that you should be aware that you may have one or two follow-up surgeries in your lifetime. It’s not a given, but it is better to be prepared for the possibility than to be surprised when you experience a change of presentation or dissatisfaction with your implants.

When it comes to the “average lifespan” of implants, there are no guarantees. Some will last a lifetime, while others have complications. On average, the majority of implants last 8-15 years. Recent FDA reports indicate that about 20% of women will have their breast implants repaired or replaced within 10 years of the original surgery.

There are two basic types of breast implants: saline and silicone gel.

Saline Implants
Saline-filled implants are silicone shells filled with sterile salt water (saline).   In addition to the traditional, single-shell saline implant, Dr. Chahin offers a new, state of the art saline implant option: Ideal Implant. The Ideal implant is a multiple chamber implant which offers a nicer feel and look to the implanted breast.

Silicone Implants
Silicone implants have been redesigned to use a cohesive gel technology, allowing for a more stable form of gel. Although many women say that silicone gel implants look and feel more like real breasts than saline, new technology has offered various options to provide the patient with multiple choices to get an optimal, desired end-result with both types of implants.

The pain from breast augmentation surgery is usually in the moderate range and generally can be well controlled with medication in the first 1-2 weeks following the surgery. It is important to note that severe or untreatable pain following surgery is rather uncommon.

Dr. Chahin methodically uses a technique of Preemptive Analgesia where you inject numbing medication prior to incisions. This has proven scientifically to significantly reduce the pain and discomfort after surgery.

Downtime for a breast augmentation is very minimal. Most patients are able to function comfortably within a few days after the procedure. However, the healing process is ongoing for the next 4-6 months.

Most women will experience a temporary change in feeling or sensation following breast augmentation surgery. For most of them, this lasts 6-12 months before returning to normal. Although it is uncommon, some women, however, have permanent alterations in nipple sensation. Some women may even experience an increase in nipple sensation after the procedure.
