Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)

Breast reduction "Reduction Mammoplasty" is a procedure designed to reshape large, pendulous or disproportionately sized breasts by reducing excess breast volume and relocating the nipple and areola to a more desirable and natural location, thus reshaping the breast silhouette.

Various surgical techniques can be utilized for Reduction Mammoplasty, including the traditional inverted T-shaped scar (na) with central mound reduction, the inferior pedicle technique with a similarly shaped scar, and the more modern short scar technique. The particular procedure chosen will depend upon the patient's breast shape and size, as well as her age, and these options would be discussed thoroughly in a personal consultation.

Who is a candidate for Breast Reduction?

Women with large, pendulous breasts may experience physical pain and discomfort that impairs their ability to lead an active lifestyle. They may also experience psychological distress from their disproportionate breast size. A

Breast Reduction procedure may be a good option for women when breast size:

  • Limits physical activities.
  • Causes chronic pain in the back and shoulders.
  • Contributes to poor posture with shoulder slouching "kyphosis".
  • Causes issues with healthy body image.

How can you prepare for your surgery?

  • Avoid medications that may complicate surgery or recovery such as herbal supplements, aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (Motrin, Advil, etc).
  • Arrange for transportation and care at home after surgery.
  • Stop smoking at least 3 weeks before and after surgery (minimum of six weeks total).

The Surgical Procedure

The surgical procedure corrects undesired excess breast volume as well as vertically lifting the nipple-areolar complex to its original location. This can be accomplished via various techniques: the traditional inverted T-shaped scar with central mound reduction, the inferior pedicle technique with a similar scar, and the newer short scar technique.

Reduction Mammoplasty also removes the redundant skin that results from the downward stretch of breast tissue over time.

How long does the surgery take?

  • Approximately 3-5 hours depending on the extent of the procedure.
  • It is performed at a hospital or surgery center depending on the extent of the procedure and the patient's medical history and other safety guidelines.
  • It is performed under general anesthesia.
  • It is usually an outpatient procedure or it may require an overnight stay.

What can you expect after surgery?

  • Bed-rest the first day with minimal short walks.
  • Shower 2-3 days after surgery.
  • The breasts will initially appear slightly larger.
  • The breast size and location will assume their final shape in 4-8 weeks.
  • The chest will feel somewhat sore for the first few days; however, the discomfort will improve quickly over a period of two weeks.
  • You can expect to be very comfortable within three weeks.

When can you resume your normal activities?

  • Light activities will be possible within the first week.
  • You will be able to resume regular physical activities in 3-6 weeks.
  • It is essential to limit your upper body activities and follow these guidelines carefully because premature physical activity could result in an unfavorable outcome.
